Community Town Fair for Refugee Families : Region: Oakland, California

June 20, 2025

We had some summer fun! We partnered with a local Oakland business, Discover Community Cafe to create a day of fun for our community. We were able to serve over 100 community members and graciously received sponsorship from a our partners Costco and Trader Joes.

Under the 2025 federal budget and SNAP rule changes, refugees and other lawful immigrants who previously relied on food aid are now being excluded from eligibility.

The new administration's "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" (H.R. 1) passed by a Republican-led Congress in July 2025, now restricts SNAP eligibility to only citizens and lawful permanent residents, forcing refugees and asylees to lose critical food aid, removing a crucial safety net and impacting their stability in the U.S, as they work to rebuild their lives.

As a response to the new LAW, we are gearing up to open our food pantry in Southern California near our office in San Diego, CA.

Today, approximately one in four residents in San Diego County, overall, struggle with food insecurity, and the impact is even more severe among immigrant and refugee families now excluded from federal support.

San Diego is home to one of the largest refugee populations in California, and a significant portion of this community is made up of Black immigrants and refugees of African descent, who already face higher rates of unemployment, housing instability, and food insecurity. Recent community surveys conducted by the PANA, since the pandemic, show that over 80% of refugee households reported major job loss, with nearly 40% of African refugee respondents reporting worsening access to food.

This is why opening a food pantry in downtown San Diego is critical — the area offers central access to major public transportation routes, making it easier for individual and families without cars to reach essential resources. To further reduce barriers, we plan to provide bus vouchers and other transportation support, ensuring that lack of mobility does not prevent individuals and families from accessing nutritious food. In partnership with local grocery stores and local farms throughout the San Diego region, our pantry will distribute fresh, culturally appropriate, and nutritious food, supporting both community health and the local food system.

We are jump starting our end of the year fundraising to open our pantry in 2026. As we enter the New Year, we have our hopes high and expectations set to make a huge impact in our community. Our pantry is designed to meet people where they are, filling a growing gap left by federal cuts.

Your support will help us ensure that no individual, child, or parent goes hungry because of these cuts. Together we can provide stable access to fresh food, dignity, and hope for those now left with nowhere else to turn.
